Ala Moana Center

Ala Moana Center

Case Study

Project: Roof and Parking Canopy
Modules: Canadian Solar CS6k305
Inverters: Fronius
Parking Canopy: Skyline Steel
Roof Racking System: DPW
Installer: Hawaii Pacific Solar (HPS)

HPS installed solar photovoltaic systems over 5 phases totaling more than 2.8 MW at Ala Moana Center from 2016 to 2018. The systems were installed on both rooftop and parking canopy structures. Given the public nature of the largest shopping mall in Hawaii, safety for personnel, pedestrians and shoppers was paramount, especially during the busy year-end shopping seasons. Work was often done after-hours when possible including trenching, electrical tie ins and during busy holiday shopping periods.
There were several unique aspects of the project: one phase had a 3800 foot run from the PV array to the tie in point running 7 conduits and installing more than 5 miles of wire. Another phase had a tie in point in an electrical room on the 22nd floor requiring special coring and fire protection walls for the conduits.

The systems in total will produce almost 5 gigawatts of electrical power per year.

With Ala Moana’s 60th anniversary in 2019, HPS is happy to have been part of the center’s dedication to renewable energy for its tenants and guests.
